The Friends of Evergreen, Established in 1991

A non-profit advocate for Portland's historic Evergreen Cemetery. Through their efforts Evergreen Cemetery has been admitted to the National Register of Historic Places and has received protection under Portland’s Historic Preservation Ordinance. Grants have enabled the Friends to create a Master Plan and fund many restoration projects.

Mission Statement

The Friends of Evergreen is dedicated to the preservation and protection of Evergreen Cemetery’s natural beauty and its historic and cultural significance. The Friends encourage community involvement through programs, historic research, public education and preservation projects.

Board of Directors

Stephen Bither: is a Portland native, and received a JD from the University of Maine School of Law. He is the founder and member of the Wicked Good Band, co -authored three editions of Maine Curiosities with Tim Sample and enjoys walks in Evergreen Cemetery any time of the year.

Brenda Harrison: is the FoE bookkeeper. She started bookkeeping for her father’s business in 1979, and in 2012 started her own business. Her clients include many non-profits. She has family members in five local cemeteries and enjoys researching her family history.

Janet Joyce: has a B.A. in Anthropology from The University of Maine. Since retiring from banking, she has explored every inch of Evergreen and taken over 25,000 photographs of stones and scenes in the cemetery. Many of these may be seen on Find A Grave.  A long time member of Maine Old Cemeteries Association, she is interested in the care and preservation of gravestones as well as the natural life around them. 

David Little: has a passion for plein-air painting, and maintains a studio in Portland, near Evergreen. He holds an MFA from the University of Iowa, and has published several books on the art of various areas of Maine. He is a long time member of the board, and co-leads four Artist walking tours.

Janet Morelli: received an MLS from the University of Rhode Island and has been a medical and a school librarian. She has served various positions on the board over the years, is currently a docent, and had produced the original walking tour brochures. 

Mary Anne Wallace: has numerous childhood memories of Evergreen. She received a MLS from the University of Maine and was a librarian in both public and college libraries. She also has a M.A. in New England Studies from University of Southern Maine. In addition to serving on the board, she is a one of the cemetery docents and is a docent at Victoria Mansion.
